Kombah Village, Swaziland
Kombah is a rural village in the northeastern quadrant of Swaziland. We visited this village twice during my recent trip, taking pictures of the children and care givers then returning to deliver the photo's. Here is a snapshot of their lifestyle and homesteads.
Most of the 'homes' in this village consist of 1 room with walls of sticks, thatch, mud and/or rocks.
Dinner: Live chickens can be purchased daily from the back of pick-up trucks that pass by the village.
Children and adults alike wear whatever clothing they can scrounge up. Clothing is often threadbare, torn, and ill-fitting. There is no such thing as a washing machine, shower or even fresh clean water in this area so filth is abundant.
Children play with whatever can be found... often garbage discarded by others becomes a creative outlet.
Like children everywhere, attention and loving compassion are craved.
Local women 'weave' thatch mats using old batteries to weight their threads.
One of the local cooks who provides a meal each day for the children shows us the inside of her home. She is very proud of her homestead and rightfully so... it is the nicest in the village.
